Exceptional Family Member Program

Exceptional Family Member Program (EFMP)

The Navy’s Exceptional Family Member Program (EFMP) supports military families with special medical or educational needs. Enrollment is mandatory for sponsors with qualifying family members and ensures families receive the services, resources, and assignment coordination needed throughout the sponsor’s career.

EFMP includes identifying a family member’s special needs, completing enrollment, coordinating assignments, and providing ongoing family support. The program helps ensure Sailors are assigned to locations where their Exceptional Family Members (EFMs) can access appropriate medical, educational, and community resources.

Qualifying needs may include medical, dental, mental health, developmental, or educational requirements, as well as the need for adaptive equipment, assistive technology, or wheelchair accessibility.

Families are encouraged to call or visit the Fleet & Family Support Center for guidance, enrollment support, and help navigating available services.

EFMP Support & Resources

EFMP now offers expanded support, including Special Education assistance for families navigating school-based services and individualized education needs.
